Drones are now part of everyday life in Australia. Used by businesses, farmers, emergency services, researchers, creatives, and recreational users, they deliver significant economic and social benefits.
As the technology advances and drones have become more affordable, capable, and easier to operate, they are being used more across the country. This is changing the risk environment in which drones operate.
The Drone Security Public Consultation Paper seeks input from recreational drone users, industry, retailers, and the wider community to inform the development of policy outcomes for safe and responsible drone use. This will help address priorities identified in the Aviation White Paper: Towards 2050.
Australia’s current regulatory framework has largely focused on aviation safety and the integration of aerial drones into controlled airspace. While this approach has supported safe aviation outcomes, it does not fully address broader security risks, particularly around critical infrastructure, major events, crowded places, and sensitive sites.
Community and stakeholder feedback on the consultation paper will help shape future rules to keep people safe, protect important places, and support the responsible use of drones in Australia.
Consultation closes at 12:00PM (AEST) on Monday 25 May 2026. For more information and to have your say visit the Department of Home Affairs' consultation page.
