Best-Practice Procurement Guidelines

The growing range of potential applications for drones and electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) vehicles offers increasing benefits in the delivery of government services.

These technologies can be deployed in a wide variety of situations and deliver cheaper and more efficient outcomes than achievable with existing models, such as in healthcare, firefighting, telecommunications connectivity and many more. This is even possible in requests for services that have not considered the possibility or impact of using emerging aviation technologies.

Increasing the availability of opportunities for the local adoption of drone and eVTOL technology will support a strong Australian based manufacturing and design industry, and improve Australia's competitiveness for international investment.

The department is developing best-practice guidelines to support the consideration of emerging aviation technologies within government procurement processes, and will work with Commonwealth, state, territory and local government agencies to encourage the adoption of these guidelines.

The guidelines will outline best-practice procurement principles for government agencies to consider when requesting or tendering services which may have a role for emerging aviation technologies.

Further updates to this page will follow initial consultation on draft guidelines anticipated for 2023.
